Designing A Malibu Wedding
We had the pleasure this year of designing a Destination Malibu wedding at Stone Mountain Estates. The bride was inspired by vintage details, European flair, and citrus hues. How do we combine all these elements together to develop an elegant outdoor wedding design? Read further to see how it all came together.
First, we selected a color palette that reflected the bride's preferences, featuring soft shades of pastels and greenery. Next, we chose a mix of vintage and modern elements, including furniture that exuded the style of my client. MTB Event Rentals was the one-stop shop for us in event rentals in LA. The Distressed Cream Louis Chair was the perfect chair for this event. With its heavy weight and bold design, it paired perfectly with other elements we had. Our base for the design was the Snow Laurel Linen by Nuage Designs and blue napkins. The client wanted an array of colors and didn't want one color to be predominant. Therefore, the mix of citrus and pastel florals by Poppy Lavender paired well. On the tabletop we found a mix match collection of vintage statues, vases, compotes, and bowls from Sundrop Vintage.
One of our first steps in creating a visual aid for our design concept is a design sketch. This hand-drawn rendering allows us to bring our ideas to life and visualize the overall aesthetic of the event.
The sketch includes key elements such as the layout, furniture, lighting, and decor. We also incorporate the color palette and textures to give a comprehensive view of the design. This sketch serves as a starting point for our clients to understand our vision and make any necessary adjustments before moving forward with the design.
In addition to the sketch, we also create 3D renderings and digital designs to further enhance the visual representation. These renderings allow us to experiment with different layouts, colors, and textures, ensuring that every detail is meticulously considered.
By presenting our clients with both sketches and digital renderings, we provide a comprehensive visual aid that enables them to fully immerse themselves in the design concept. This collaborative process ensures that everyone involved has a clear understanding of the final product, resulting in a seamless execution of the event design.
To create a cohesive look with mix-and-matched elements, we rely on the power of pattern and intentional placement. While each element may not match exactly, we carefully curate a visual rhythm by repeating shapes, textures, or colors in a deliberate pattern. This pattern creates a sense of harmony and balance, tying together seemingly disparate elements.
One of our favorite techniques is to work with odd numbers, like grouping three statues or clustering five items together. This approach adds visual interest and creates a more dynamic, organic feel. By balancing different heights, textures, and colors within the grouping, we achieve a sense of cohesion and visual flow.
Additionally, we consider the following principles to ensure a cohesive look:
- Repetition: Repeating similar shapes, colors, or textures to create a visual thread throughout the design.
- Proportion: Balancing the scale of different elements to create a sense of harmony.
- Emphasis: Creating focal points with statement pieces or bold colors to draw the eye.
- Unity: Using a consistent color palette or style to tie everything together.
By applying these principles and working with patterns and odd numbers, we transform mix-and-matched elements into a beautiful, cohesive design that tells a story and creates a lasting impression.
As we reflect on this design journey, we're reminded that weddings are about so much more than just aesthetics. They're about love, community, and the beginning of a new chapter in life. Our goal as designers is to create a backdrop for those memories to unfold, and we're grateful to have had the opportunity to do so in this stunning Malibu setting.
